Towing and Insurance: When Is Towing Covered By Car Insurance?

Nevada is home to anywhere between 40,000 and 50,000+ car accidents every year – and nearly half of those accidents happen in fabulous Las Vegas. That equates to about 50 accidents per day in Sin City.

And that doesn’t even include car breakdowns.

Research indicates that roughly one of every three drivers will have their vehicle break down at least once every year. Considering how many residents (and tourists) hit the road daily in Las Vegas, we’re talking hundreds of car breakdowns every day – and hundreds of people who need towing services every day.

Isn’t that what car insurance is for?

See, that’s the thing about car insurance – most basic insurance plans don’t cover towing and labor costs, even in the event of a not-at-fault accident. If you’re stranded on the side of the road, you’re on your own.

Well, that is unless you pay for extra coverage.

But even then, insurance coverages vary with each plan.

That’s why we always preach two things when looking for towing coverage: do your research and always ask questions. Don’t worry – we’re going to teach you everything you need to know about towing and insurance, including the difference between towing and labor coverage, and what roadside assistance is.

Let’s get started!

Towing Coverage vs. Labor Coverage

Car insurance coverage comes in a variety of forms, but most plans can be broken down into one of two groups – mandatory coverage (required by federal/state law) or optional coverage (additional benefits).

Mandatory coverage, also known as liability coverage, is a type of insurance that helps pay for the costs of the other driver’s property damage and/or bodily injuries if you are considered “at fault” in an accident.

It’s the type of insurance states require by law, and failure to comply results in fines and suspensions.

Optional coverage, on the other hand, provides further protection at an additional cost. While not required by law, this type of insurance is highly recommended – especially since tragedy can strike at any moment!

Towing and labor coverage are two examples of optional coverage – let’s take a closer look at each one!

Towing Coverage: Getting Your Car From Point A to Point B

Towing coverage comes in handy when the car is out of commission. It covers the cost of towing the vehicle either to a nearby mechanic or another desired location (such as your home or parent’s house).

It’s important to note that towing coverage does have limits.

Since most tow truck companies charge by the mile, insurance providers generally only cover up to a certain mileage (can be between 15 and 100 miles) or dollar amount (anywhere between $50 and $500+).

Some companies take this coverage a step further.

Though rare, some insurance companies will send you reimbursement you for any lodging, food, and/or transportation costs you absorb as a result of your vehicle breaking down – though, again, there is a limit to it.

Labor Coverage: Getting Your Vehicle Back Up and Running

Labor coverage comes in handy when your car breaks down but only needs minor, basic repairs to get it back up and running. This includes flat tires, running out of gas, getting locked out, dead battery, and much more.

While it doesn’t cover the parts, it does cover the labor.

For example, you’ll still be expected to pay for the gas, a new tire, or a new battery, but the insurance will cover the actual labor involved in changing the tire, delivering the gas, and jump-starting your vehicle.

Labor coverage is there when you need it the most.

Vehicles break down more than 69 million times in the United States every year – and they often come with little-to-no warning. With labor coverage, your vehicle will be back on the road in a matter of no time.

Roadside Assistance: The All-Encompassing Solution

Roadside assistance is one of the most popular, useful, and valuable types of optional coverage – in fact, nearly 80% of all drivers have some form of roadside assistance, even though it isn’t required by law.

That’s because it gives drivers peace of mind on the road.

As the name suggests, roadside assistance provides immediate assistance to drivers who are stuck on the side of the road with non-accident-related car issues – like a flat tire, no fuel, or getting locked out. Good insurance providers ensure someone is sent out to your exact location in a matter of minutes.

It’s basically towing and labor coverage combined into one.

If your vehicle can be repaired on the spot, roadside assistance covers most, if not all, of the costs to repair it. If the vehicle needs a mechanic or needs to be towed back to your house, roadside assistance covers the cost of transporting it there. Either way, it’s designed to be there when you need it most.
